Practical parenthood

August 5, 2013

In a single moment the memory memory comes ringing out loud and clear.

"Don't forget the carseat is in my car," she had reminded me as I dropped her off at the airport.

Indeed I did not forget. Well not completely. For it is as you're walking with a 10-month old and a 4-year old, just about to reach the "wrong" car that the "now what was I forgetting" thought comes back loud and clear.

So it is that on day one of being a solo parent while the wife is away we end up leaving daycare with two girls and not the right car-seats. Of course with that one last thing that came up at work it's too close to closing time to take the kids back in and return home to get the seat.

I could walk home and get it crosses the mind briefly but the two-mile walk is longer than can be accomplished and still pick up the other kiddo.

Ah the other kiddo well at least there's an extra booster seat. It might not be the rear-facing bastion of side-impact security that one plans to put their infant in. Then you think "hmm it's probably not even legal." Even under Idaho's relatively lax child seat laws.

Farewell comments

August 3, 2013

For quite some time I have been thinking about how to make sites that are more useful and better assembled. No this is not a post-CMS look how we're managing content like it is 1995 post. But how to best put together sites that have services that the site or a small group of sites consume. The Distributed Blocks module in Drupal is a piece of this that I have batted around with several folks much brighter than me (I don't have any experience with the Distributed Blocks module or involvement in it's creation just an example of the sort of distributed SaaS solution I've envisioned.)

At any rate while I was doing some work on this site today I was facing the problem of what to do with commenting. The comments here haven't been used in a long time for anything but an attempt to spam the site. In the typical flow of things there are waves of time when spammers overwhelm or come up with a new technique to get past the excellent Mollom service. Over the last few years I've removed far more spam posts than there have been meaningful additions.

And so it becomes Drupal 7

July 21, 2013

It has taken far longer than one might have guessed but after many months of sitting mostly dormant this site finally got an upgrade to Drupal 7. Eventually maybe it will get some new functionality but for now we'll settle for a clean, responsive design.

The responsive design comes from a theme based on the contributed Corolla theme. Otherwise things are quite similar.

So while it's true what they say about the cobbler's children going barefoot the public view at least matches what I've been seeing for a while. And we won't talk about the state of the children's websites.

iFly BOI

May 18, 2013

Slowly the sun inches it's way up behind the clouds. At the west end of the runway planes are departing with regularity. In the distance the line of arriving flights dot the sky like Christmas lights hung from an invisible string.

Entering the circular ramp for the parking garage the sign says there are 6 spaces available on level 2. With time to spare and a small garage the decision to see if one of the six is available comes easily. Exiting the corkscrew ramp there are five stalls to the right blocked off for construction. Darn this is going to be harder than it looked. Maybe those stalls aren't counted. Driving down the center row no spaces appear but a couple is walking towards the terminal with roller bags in tow. Not a good sign. Reaching the end of the row and making a right hand u-turn back towards the terminal the full spaces click by. Every once in a while there's a small car next to a big one providing a moment's hope then dashing it.

Writing at the speed of life

May 17, 2013

A friend and childhood neighbor reminded me today of the importance of just doing it when it comes to writing. There are so many reasons to wait to get the tools and things in place. To get everything just so. I've been collecting things in several places over time but none should be a reason not to make the writing the habit. And so it is time to just do it.

United could do better

December 5, 2012

United text messages giving inaccurate times.Today began as many travel days do. I checked the phone and looked to see what United's app said before jumping in the shower. Like usual it said our flight should take off on time and land a few minutes early.

After wrapping up the suitcase and heading outside I got my first indication how wrong that was. The often sunny Cupertino was showing it's rainy-season side again with torrential rains. During my first meeting of the day I pulled up the FAA's website and sure enough just down the road San Francisco Airport showed a flow control program in effect. Flow control delays are often quite exacerbating when you're on smaller regional jets because you wait around for the aircraft that was late, get on board and then end up waiting, sometimes for quite a while, for clearance to take off because the FAA is managing traffic flows into the airport you're headed to.

On Flight and Argo

December 1, 2012

A few weeks back I went with a buddy to see a movie. We were angling to see Flight for which the trailers made look somewhat like an adventure-drama. Turns out it was opening night and the movie was full save for those souls who would sit in the front row and make like baby cows with their noses in the air searching for mommy. Not caring for the neck ache we returned to the theater closer to the hotel and saw Argo instead.

What a great choice that ended up being. Argo is a fantastic tale told very well. The filmmakers did a wonderful job taking this based on real events tale and turning it into a riveting adventure story. Cutting in actual footage in key places gives it the sense of realism. Of course the film's relationship with history is only good when matched against a tale like Peter and the Wolf. The bits of history woven in, however, lend great credibility to the drama and make the film great. It is worth taking a busy afternoon in the holiday season and seeing this film.
