Drush and cloning

April 12, 2014

I need to pull down a site I have on my other computer but haven't setup here for local development. I keep thinking there should be a 'drush clone' command... well there is but it clones modules not the way I'm thinking of. Basically the command I have in mind would:

  1. Clone the git repository of the site into the proper local directory.
  2. Copy the files from the production or developer site.
  3. Create the local database and sync from production or developer instance.
  4. Or instead of syncing the database do a site install if that's called for.

This requires of course that drush aliases already exist for the site. How to handle this and keep everybody in sync. Well, here's my stab at a highly configurable, very customizable drush configuration for people who work with one or more teams.

Not so bad

February 25, 2014

Friday afternoon I was having lunch with a friend when I remembered I needed to go to the AT&T store and move my iPad from a standalone plan to my family plan. Oh the dread.

Fortified with a meatball sub I made the short drive. On the way I thought “going to the cellular store is about as much fun as going to the dentist.” But then in the next minute how unfair that comparison was. My dentist is nice and my visits to her office are often reasonably enjoyable. So no this was nothing like going to the dentist.

It doesn’t matter where you go cellular stores for the carriers like AT&T and Verizon are much the same. You go in and talk to the “greeter” who is more of the list-maker. Adding you to the seemingly endless list of people waiting to be seen.

After a few dozen circuits of the store playing with the phones that are out and reading every scrap of information you find some uncomfortable corner of the floor to crowd into and hope that you have enough battery to keep yourself entertained while you wait. And wait. And wait.

More Alfred and drush love

January 16, 2014

A couple years ago I started playing with using the stellar Alfred.app with drush to get things done. This post describes how I used a now defunct URL shortener to create short links from Alfred.

Fast forward a couple of years and Adjix is no longer but the basic script still works. However it had run into a couple of issues like being hard-coded to drush paths which can vary from machine to machine. This was because the non-interactive shell wasn't picking up all the wonderful things like my $PATH definitions in settings files. So a bit of work later and this script now looks like this:

#!/bin/bash
source ~/.bashrc
echo `drush @site.env ev 'print (shorten_url("{query}"));'`

That's it. Well there are two outputs of the workflow. The first copies the results of the statement to the clipboard. The other posts it to Notification Center so you know the work is done and get to see the URL for your shortened link.

Mavericks, gmail and MailTags

November 11, 2013

For years now I've had Google Apps for one reason or another. What started out as a employer's choice in one spot and merged into being easier than managing my own servers lead me down that path. There are plenty of reasons that I'll be migrating away from this solution soon but for now it's the devil I know and have time to feed. I'll save the rant as to how many different ways gmail is really broken for another time.

Until the release of OS X Mavericks there was an uneasy truce between Mail.app and Gmail. You simply did a few things, well a bunch of few things, but one time setup and it was done. Then along came Mavericks and there was pain. A few changes and things were ok again, assuming you had the time and bandwidth to let your massive collection of email download. The truce was uneasy but it continued to work. Then last week Apple released a fix to help Mail.app work better with gmail. And that's when things stopped working. At least for me and a collection of others who could no longer get mail in the Inbox.

Hosting Drupal sites on CloudFront

October 25, 2013

So the term hosting may be technically inaccurate here. However the practice of deploying sites entirely behind CloudFront recently got much easier. The change came in this announcement that CloudFront now supports POST requests. A long time (years) in coming, this now gives options to sites that would like to have quick setup with a CDN and have lightening fast sites with minimal setup. I'll post more soon on how to do it but it's great to know that it's possible now.

Oh the places you'll go...

August 19, 2013

It could have been worse

All things considered I'm a pretty good traveler. I've racked up more than a handful of frequent flyer miles criss-crossing the globe to help deliver Open Source software to places far and wide.

Given the number of days I've spent in airports and on their companion tubes hurdling through the air a few tricks to make things easier have been picked up along the way. In addition there is plenty to know about scheduling and when to do certain things. This all brought me to the airport early Friday morning for a short flight from Boise to San Francisco for work. Arriving at the airport and flitting through security, my laptop was coming to life as soon as it touched the desk in the business center.

Oh the writing

August 6, 2013

Back to school time means lots of writing. Not so much for the grade-school kids, their turn will come but for parents. And it's not the sort of writing one does with a keyboard.

On the eve of a new school year it is the parents who do the writing. Our daughter's teacher had a great idea of having a note for each of the four days this first week and how the child was getting home. Also on each note was the emergency contact, all on a small note that could be kept with the child. A great idea for sure. But man oh man did it highlight just how infrequently I write long-hand these days. Combine that with the added fine-motor insult of not having my own pen which rolls easier and the day ended with a cramped hand to be sure.

One day soon even many of these routine writing tasks may well be done on the keyboard but until then each August as the new school year rolls around parents will get a taste of good old fashioned writing.
