Live blogging from the Democratic Presidential Debate Watch Party from UNLV

Doing a little live blogging from the Democratic Presidential Debate at UNLV tonight. Senator Biden is clearly coming out as the winner in the first half of the debate. Senator Clinton said at the opening of the debate that she was wearing an asbestos pant suit. That pant suit certainly got a workout in early sparing with Senator Edwards. Senator Biden was way ahead with charm and down to earth answers and staying on point about how we take the country and world forward instead of political sparing.

Colorado State victory makes Monday morning easier

I'll freely admit that I was pretty nervous. The combination of a 13-game loosing streak and UNLV being a 2-point favorite for UNLV's homecoming game Saturday evening made for a real possibility that UNLV would beat the Rams for the first time in years. Sure there were all sorts of things that one can point to showing why CSU should win the game. The fact remains that CSU lost several games that they should have won in the midst of this streak. However, the Rams' 48-23 victory makes it a little easier to go to the office on Monday. The Rams' slide has raised the speculation around Coach Sonny Lubick's possible retirement. It is ironic given that what has made Lubick so successful is that his teams always have heart. Only once in the 13-game streak did the team seem defeated by their own lack of motivation. And that game, last week against Air Force, now seems a one-time event. Whatever happens the Sonny Lubick bobble head on my desk will remain proudly in place.

Something is rotten....

The UNLV newspaper "The Rebel Yell" has a brief note today that UNLV's dean of liberal arts, Ed Shoben, was forced out of his position today. I haven't had the opportunity to work directly with Dean Shoben but I have worked with his wife Professor Shoben who is an outstanding educator and just plain brilliant. From what little I know of Dean Shoben it is hard to imagine what could possibly have caused this situation. I hope it can be worked out shortly as I'm quite certain UNLV will be stronger if we keep a good dean.

Why have college football?

"Why the hell would you have a football team when nobody goes to the games?" asked Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Jim Rogers Tuesday. Rogers sent a memo to the board of regents asking them to look into the sports programs at UNLV and UNR. The UNLV program brought in $1.2 million last year but placed more than $4 million to run.

UNLV names David Ashley President

The Las Vegas Review Journal is among other sources reporting that the Nevada System of Higher Education voted this morning to make David Ashley, Provost of University of California, Merced, the next president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Ashley will assume the Presidency on July 1.

UNLV rated among top universities in the west

Christine Little has a little article in the Las Vegas Sun proclaiming that a "National Study" flunked UNLV students and teachers. What the article really says is that UNLV is one of the top institutions in the nation, the only such school in the state. It appears that Little must not have done so well in journalism class because she fails to distinguish between a statistically invalid survey and a 'study' as she calls it. Study implies there is some validity to the numbers. What the survey really says is that the people from UNLV (as supposedly ascertained by a 'valid' UNLV student email address - which could be very difficult to ascertain) rate the university lower than respondents at other institutions.

The Rebel Yell has another article on the topic.
