5 fun things to start September

Picture of fall in New England September has sprung. To kick off the month here are five things to ponder.

First up as fall comes so does the football season. Tackling, blocking and trick plays abound. Perhaps the Western Athletic Conference should have considered Boise State's bragging on the radio about "creativity on the football field" to include sharing trick plays with their new conference, the Mountain West Conference. So far the most entertaining plays have been the off-the-field plays between the WAC, BYU and the MWC. Ultimately it's bemusing to see the mis-management that's kept the WAC in the basement of athletic leagues sink the ship. Having gone from courting BYU to not enough teams to remain a conference in the blink of an eye.

A holiday story

Between creating a few dozen websites, making several coast-to-coast trips and having a generally great year the holiday season somehow snuck up and is here already. The season of holiday bazars is upon us and it is tough to enter any sort of store without hearing holiday music floating through the air.

Our weekend got off to a great start with the storytelling of Christopher Leebrick. In an appearance at the Ada Community Library in Star Leebrick told the classic christmas tale of How the Grinch Stole Christmas and several other stories from around the world. If you're looking for a unique and wonderful gift for children of any age be sure to consider a CD from this award-winning North-westerner.

We exist...

You wouldn't know it from the dearth of blogging going on here but indeed we do exist. And now, only several years after the house we live in was built, Google Maps thinks we exist too. No more do we have to explain to delivery drivers that they can't use Google Maps or they'll end up on the other side of the park with no way to get here. More soon on life, universe and yes, even Drupal but for now we're enjoying the first rain on this beautiful Saturday morning.

Cowboy Christmas 2008 edition in Las Vegas

Each day folks stop by looking for information on Cowboy Christmas so I guess it's never to early to post information about the 2008 show.

  • The Las Vegas Convention Center hosts the Cowboy Christmas Gift Show which is open 10AM - 5PM daily from Thursday, December 4 through Saturday, December 13 at the Las Vegas Convention Center this show bills itself as "longest running and only “Original” gift show of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo"
  • My personal favorite the Ariat Country Christmas Western Gift Expo returns for the 15th year at the Sands Convention Center and runs from Friday, December 4 - Sunday, December 14. Their site doesn't give hours but it's safe to assume they will be similar daytime hours.
  • The Mandalay Bay Convention Center will again play host to the Cowboy Marketplace Western Lifestyle Expo December 5 - 13
  • So whether you're headed to Las Vegas for the NFR or just for some holiday shopping it should be a great time in Vegas again this year.

The second third of life

Cannondale F5Singing Phil Vassar's song Tim McGraw tells us:

I think I'll take a moment, celebrate my age
The ending of an era and the turning of a page
Now it's time to focus in on where I go from here
Lord have mercy on my next thirty years

I'm measuring not in 30-year spans but in a third of life spans. Having just put up the score card on the first third it is time to turn to the second third. My family was very nice and procured some long-desired toys that will help focus my next third on staying in better shape. The Cannondale parking area now has another member. Sadly, it is also the first Cannondale that I have owned which does not bear the "Made in USA" label. The last Cannondales I purchased came with a manual declaring their proud factory and a video telling the company's tale. Granted the video was a VHS tape which I would have to hunt for a way to play now days but it remains a sad marker on the changing of the times and I contributed to it. Cannondale and Trek among others do still make bikes in the USA but they are the higher end bikes.

Invoke, evoke, provoke

Some of the folks from Cirque du Soleil were on campus Tuesday to talk about the entertainment industry. They shared their corporate mission which I like a great deal. "To invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people around the world." It makes for a good motto too. Invoke, evoke, provoke.

And they have some interesting jobs available for folks living in the right locations.
