DVR owners watch less TV

Market research cited in the New York Times suggests adults in households with digital video recorders (DVR) watch less television than their counterparts in households without. In our house it is true without a doubt. Since 2002 when we got a pair of TiVo DVR's our TV viewing has continued to decline. Prior to TiVo it was common to leave the boob tube on all evening with some educational show... it had to be educational or it wouldn't have been on The Learning Channel, right?

Temporary Fobbit

A fobbit (rhymes with hobbit) is a soldier who never leaves the FOB. They are usually the brunt of jokes by infantry soldiers and others who routinely go out on patrols and other missions off of the FOB. Pilots fall somewhere between Fobbits and the "hard-core" soldiers. After all, we leave the FOB all the time but its usually just to fly to another FOB. In any case, I have spent the last month as a Fobbit here at FOB Warrior in Kirkuk and have to say that the life is pretty good. Ive been tanning, hitting the gym, working regular hours, and keeping track of the increasing violence by seeing it on TV rather than flying above it. Sadly, my time as the LNO is coming to an end. I expect to return to Speicher shortly. On the positive side, I will get back to flying.

I had a memorable dinner a few nights ago that I thought Id share with you all. The ODA invited some of us planners to come to dinner at their compound as a thank you for the support we have provided. ODA stands for Operational Detachment Alpha. If that sounds cryptic its because its meant to. These are the American soldiers who dont wear uniforms, have long hair and beards, and live on their own in a walled compound. I walked over to the compound and immediately saw the screened-in porch filled with people. Dinner was great. The ODA guys have the opportunity to do thier food shopping off of the FOB so they prepared a middle eastern feast of chicken, lamb, rice, kabobs, hummus, and chai tea. I hung out for a while with the ODA and the planners with whom I have been working. I gorged myself on the only fresh and authentic food I have had the opportunity to eat here in Iraq.

Apple's laptops impressing Windows users

A recent AP article reviewed the new Apple laptop lineup with a focus on the impressive MacBook.
With extra software, the newer Macs can run Microsoft Corp.'s Windows as well as Apple's Mac OS X. This could spell trouble for notebook makers who can't offer the best of both worlds, particularly in light of the MacBook's starting price of $1,099.

This is something that other computer companies should take note of. Especially in light of the lackluster customer service. For example since March the university I work for has been trying to purchase UPS power supplies for our computers. Our sales person at Dell has been the most uncooperative possible. Whenever I ask who we can talk to at Dell about the string of commitments and broken promises I'm told to talk to the university. Not once has the sales person or anyone else at Dell acknowledged that their failure to be able to ship equipment when promised or that they need purchase orders faxed three or more times is a problem, not of the university's failing but of the business providing the service.

From Earth to the Moon

For years I've been a fan of the space program. For all its flaws NASA has an amazing record of achievement. As such I have a pretty solid understanding of the history of the space program and have seen many great and not so great films on the subject.

As a Netflix viewer I've had the HBO series From Earth to the Moon on the list for some time now. However with the general notion that there wouldn't be much new in the story I kept pushing it down the stack. Recently the first DVD arrived and it is so far from a stale retelling of the same fascinating story.

One of the big things the series did well is it abandoned the notion that the space story needs to be told chronologically. Following Part 4 - 1968 which shows the important impact of the Apollo program on bringing some light to a dark time, the next episode Part 5 - Spider starts in 1962 with the development of the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) and follows the process through 1969. This form of storytelling makes it possible to focus on the stories of the Apollo program.

It would be funny if only....

"We are experiencing minor problems with voice mail," is the note that was sent to everyone in the company. In this case minor means it's been completely non-functional for several hours in the middle of the business day. Rather like the minor problem of my air conditioner. It doesn't cool and it is 115 outside.

And so it goes

Of course the week after we purchase a new car there has to be news on what's coming next. True to form Wired has the article today about the impressive next generation of electric vehicles. Then again our car will be paid off a lot sooner than one costing $80,000. The pop-culture buffs amongst us will appreciate that in driving a Prius you're driving the same car as Alexandra Paul, Alicia Silverstone, Billy Crystal, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, David Duchovny, Ellen DeGeneres, Gwyneth Paltrow, Harrison Ford, Jack Black, Jack Nicholson, Kevin Bacon, Kirk Douglas, Kurt Russell, Leonardo DiCaprio, Patricia Arquette, Rob Reiner, Robin Williams, Salma Hayek, Susan Sarandon, Steven Spielberg, Tim Robbins, Ted Danson, Tom Hanks, Woody Harrelson and Will Ferrell.

Clean Air Please

Marriott announced today that as of September all its US and Canadian properties will be entirely non smoking. Having recently stayed in a town where I could only get a smoking room I have to say this is a great move on Marriott's part.

Act locally

With this past weekend's story about 2006 being the warmest year on record one is left to consider what each of us can do to reduce our impact on the atmosphere. Only a few politicians still suggest with a straight face that the jury is out on the matter of global warming. However, few governments will do anything substantial about the problem. So the important question becomes what are each of us doing?

William Floreck (1949-2006)

William Edward Floreck (1949-2006)For weeks now I've had this item on my to-do list. It is time to send an update to the folks on the list and let them know what we're up to in life. Without fail when I sent that note I would have gotten a thoughtful beautiful response from Bill.

When checking email this afternoon, however, I saw an email from a friend with the subject Bill Floreck. When a friend emails and the subject is the name of another friend the news is never good. And it was the worst sort of news possible.

"Bill Floreck passed away on Friday, July 14th," the message began. A very sad day indeed.
