Communications Conundrum

Not long ago the communications plan seemed simple. At the house there is only one cellular carrier that has  a signal. DirecWay satellite is increasingly poor and the time has come to do something different for interent connectivity. For several months we tried, unsuccessfully, to get the local wireless co-op to hook us up. Terribly long story short they're not a serious contender. It all seemed so simple. EvDO on the Sprint connection and we're good to go. Sprint has the best-in-class price for EvDO at $15 a month on a cell phone or $50 for a standalone wireless card. Then the plan goes to pieces. Cingular goes and puts up a tower in town. Now there are other options and yet fewer options at the same time. The problem now is the waiting game. Do we wait for Cingular to get their permanent tower up? What about Cingular not having EvDO.Then out of the blue comes another option. Looking around the net WildBlue seems to have a pretty good reputation and not have all the same problems as DirecWay. Seemingly overnight the problem has gone from too few options to too many. The problem being that each of the options requires a contract to make the up-front price palatable. Which way to jump?

Back to work (sort of)

My two-weeks of R&R ended at 1300 (EST) on the 28th but I am not yet at Speicher. If Iraq is hell than Kuwait is purgatory. I am in Kuwait waiting for a flight to Speicher. More specifically, I am at a small Army airfield living in a tent using the dwindling supplies in my very compact carry-on bag. I bought a towel and shower shoes today so I could get cleaned up a little. The temperature easily got to 110 so, needless to say, I got a little sweaty.

My time back in the States was wonderful. I took a three night carribean cruise with my girlfriend, Pam, as soon as I arrived. I spent the rest of the two weeks in Chattanooga dividing my time as best I could between friends and family. I indulged in such luxuries as indoor plumbing, civilian clothes, fresh cooked meals, a wonderfully comfortable bed, and the company of the people I love. I didn't realize quite how much I missed these otherwise routine pleasures until I had them back. Their absence is hitting me hard here in Kuwait. I will, of course, get used to their absence once again.

I expect to be back at Speicher tomorrow. I will probably be given a few days to get over the jet lag and then get thrown back into the mix. I am due for my annual flight evaluation this month (because June is my birth month). I guess I will have to take some time away from working out and sun bathing to do some studying. Oh the sacrifices of being a pilot! Returning to the war is a little bit easier knowing that we are definately on the downhill part of the deployment. No dates are ever certain but, assuming we stay a year, I will be done with this deployment before Sepetember ends. That is less than four months remaining. Yeah!

Podcasting plunge

After months and months of talking about it with friends and thinking I should get around to it, I've finally bitten the bullet and taking the podcasting plunge. The first two Boys' State Podcasts are online. A little rough around the edges to be sure but in the school of jumping in with both feet they are online.

A quick (very quick) survey of Google suggests Nevada Boys' State might be the first Boys' State program in the country to be podcasting. The delegates to this year's program will be participating in the podcasting experiment as well, producing new content each day to share with those back home and the world at large.

American Legion Nevada Boys' State Website

The American Legion Nevada Boys' State website has undergone a major revision. It was the last of the sites I manage to get the Drupal 4.7 upgrade. In addition this morning it got the wonderful CiviCRM. Still working through getting all the data moved into the new system and getting the legislature section of the website ready for the 60th legislative session of American Legion Nevada Boys' State.

Sad news for Apple Store

Macenstein reports some bad news for the newest Apple Store in New York. Everybody needs to take a look at this article.

A little tip

Each day provides new opportunities to learn important little tips. Tonight, for example, I spent some time helping in the kitchen. Not much really, just a couple of batches of cookies that have to be moved from the oven to the cooling rack and the next batch journeys to the oven.

It turns out, however, that flipping hot cookies straight from the cookie sheet into the air like a flapjack and aiming for the cooling rack is not a good idea. Warm to hot cookie parts end up strewn everywhere.

UNLV names David Ashley President

The Las Vegas Review Journal is among other sources reporting that the Nevada System of Higher Education voted this morning to make David Ashley, Provost of University of California, Merced, the next president of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Ashley will assume the Presidency on July 1.

Is this really tech news

Nicole Kidman engagement to Keith Urban

I've recently been considering deleting either the Yahoo Top News or Yahoo Tech News feeds from my newsreader. All too commonly it seems there is a great deal of overlap. This morning's item takes the cake. Is it Nicole Kidman's appeal to technologists that makes it a tech story?

Time to try Skype again

In the past I played with Skype to kill a little time. It seemed like a great idea but not one I'd gotten into. If we had a more reliable connection maybe I'd consider it but it doesn't seem to make a lot of sense with the satellite albatross.Today, however, Skype announced they are not charging for calls placed to traditional telephones through the end of the year. Time to investigate.

Some great OS X Firefox links

Weeks ago I wrote about my migration to Firefox as a web browser. While it is great it still lacked some of the really nice OS X features of Safari. Tonight while reading through some of the daily sources I read, I came across a post on Hicksdesign that has several great extensions and outstanding themes.
